What fire safety specialists study in ETH’s continuing education programme
Beginning in 2027, fire safety engineering will be planned more precisely as new regulations are introduced. ETH Zurich trains engineers by applying principles of physics and conducting experiments in a fire simulator.
Fire safety regulations aim to prevent fires from occurring and to minimise harm when they do. Depending on the type of building, builders must install fire alarms, use fire-resistant walls and doors and plan escape routes.
New regulations will come into force in Switzerland from 2027, ensuring fire risks are evaluated more scientifically and measures are tailored to the specific buildings they safeguard.
Fire safety engineers evaluate fire hazards and risks and develop measures to reduce them. Using evidence based on performance and risk, they must prove that their measures are specifically designed for the building in question and that they effectively achieve the intended level of safety.
ETH Zurich offers a master’s programme in continuing education to train specialists in this field. The video provides a glimpse into daily life on the MAS Fire Safety Engineering programme.
