Training: Design Thinking Masterclass

This one-day masterclass equips ETH teaching staff with the skills and confidence to facilitate design thinking in their own courses and learning environments.

Context

Building on the foundations of the method—a prerequisite—the workshop focuses on guiding student teams through the design thinking process, creating psychologically safe learning spaces, and choosing suitable exercises for diverse teaching goals. Participants will practice key facilitation moves, explore common teaching challenges, and apply a selection of design thinking tools using real educational scenarios. By the end of the day, participants will be able to integrate design thinking elements into their teaching and confidently lead teams through structured innovation activities.

Learning objectives

After the masterclass, participants will be able to:

  • Confidently facilitate all steps of the design thinking process, adapting them effectively to diverse teaching and learning contexts.
  • Guide student teams through the core design thinking phases—user research, ideation, prototyping, and testing—using simple and effective techniques.
  • Select and prepare suitable design thinking exercises, ensuring they directly align with specific course goals and educational objectives.
  • Cultivate psychologically safe and inclusive learning environments necessary for effective collaborative innovation.

Note:

This training is designed for individuals and teaching teams who already have experience in design thinking and wish to build upon that foundation in their teaching. If you are new to the method, we offer a two-day “Design Thinking Foundations” training to familiarize you with the process.

Time and date

The training will take place on Thursday, 18 June 2026, 08:00 -17:00 @ PBLabs RZ D8 (ETH Zentrum).
