ETH Zurich at CeBIT 2016

CeBIT, the trade fair for digitization in business, education, and society, will open its doors on 14 March 2016 in Hannover. This year, Switzerland is the Partner Country of CeBIT 2016. ETH Zurich will present the breadth of its research and education in the fields of robotics, digital fabrication, and game technology.

Johann Schneider-Ammann, President of the Swiss Confederation and Sigmar Gabriel, German Vice-Chancellor will officially open CeBIT on Monday, 14 March 2016. During the CeBIT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany and Johann Schneider-Ammann are scheduled to tour the trade fair visiting the Swiss Pavilion. Lino Guzzella, President, Detlef Günther, Vice President of Research and Corporate Relations, as well as several members of the faculty and staff will represent ETH Zurich at CeBIT 2016 with presentations and research demonstrations.

Garnering the attention of the international press and visitors to CeBIT 2016,  the 1500 m2 Swiss Pavilion will house more than 50 exhibitors including: ETH Zurich start-ups: Skye and Wingtra,  and the Swiss Innovation Park – a nationwide network for research and development.

With several flagship projects and films, ETH Zurich will demonstrate exciting insights into its socially relevant research bearing both industrial and societal applications.

SKYE

external page Skye is an energy efficient blimp, safe enough to touch in flight, with the precise handling characteristics of a quadrocopter and an integrated camera system. The advent of more and more sophisticated flying robotic systems opens up new possibilities to evoke emotion and direct interaction in brand communication and allows for the creation of three dimensional experiences. Enlarged view: Augmented_Reality

Game Technology Center  Augmented Reality provides a unique bridge between real-world activities and digital enhancement, renewing traditional activities of creative play in a new concept called, ?Augmented Creativity?. ETH Zurich will demonstrate a new application that allows two-dimensional characters to come to life in a three-dimensional form: coloring book characters become  animated in real-time. With the HeapCraft project, the ETH Zurich Game Technology Center is also studying governance decisions in online game communities, such as Minecraft, in order to gain insight about how to improve our real-world communities. external page Video clip

In situ  Fabricator

external page Digital Fabrication  In the near future robots will be able to assist humans in a large variety of tasks. They will provide support in wide range of situations and environments – from disaster mitigation to automated manufacturing. As an example, ETH Zurich presents the In situ Fabricator, a mobile and cooperating robotic construction system that brings the potential and performance of digital fabrication directly to the construction site. The use of digital resources enables a completely new approach in the field of architecture, structural engineering, and construction.
