The current state of the world asks a lot of leaders – whatever their gender, race or age may be. Crises, accountability to stakeholders, and the collective rise of mental health concerns are just some of the challenges they encounter, sometimes on a daily basis. However, the state of the world also introduces biases and stereotypes that specifically impact the way we treat women in leadership positions. But what is actually the relationship between attitude, personality, gender and behaviour of leaders – as viewed from a societal and scientific lens?

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, ETH Zurich invites you to join a Global Lecture on the topic of gender and leadership. Chris Luebkeman, Head of Foresight at ETH Zurich, will engage Julia Dannath-Schuh, ETH’s Vice President for Personnel Development and Leadership, in a stimulating conversation with guest speaker Alice Eagly. A renowned social psychologist and author of numerous works, Alice is the James Padilla Emerita Chair of Arts and Sciences, and Professor of Psychology Emerita at Northwestern University. As well as looking at gender psychology and attitudes, this discussion will consider women in leadership positions, and ask more broadly: what makes a good leader? Does gender matter? How has the concept of leadership changed with time through an increase in women leaders?
