Data Science Internship with PMOD/WRC

PMOD

Connecting Earth Observations
from the CLARA Absolute Radiometer onboard NorSat-1 with Atmospheric Parameters

Since 2020, the CLARA absolute radiometer aboard the Norwegian satellite NorSat-1 has been measuring Earth’s outgoing longwave radiation (OLR). Together with incoming Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and reflected shortwave radiation, these measurements are essential for characterizing the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB),a key factor in understanding the state of the global climate system.

This Data Science Internship with external page PMOD/WRC focuses on uncovering relationships between top-of-atmosphere (ToA) outgoing radiation and atmospheric conditions using machine learning. The intern will analyze atmospheric variables from ERA5 reanalysis data and identify significant correlation patterns with CLARA’s OLR observations.

Qualifications required: Undergraduate or Master students (ETH only); background in data analysis is required, preferentially with knowledge in AI and interest in Earth observations from space.

Start date: Any time mutually agreed upon.

Duration: 6 weeks. It is expected that you spend about half the time in Davos (to be agreed on).

Financials: Train travel to/from and accommodation in Davos are covered. A CHF 800 stipend will be provided.

More information and application: Dr. Margit Haberreiter, (in collaboration with Dr. Jean-Philippe Montillet and Dr. Wolfgang Finsterle).
