This workshop is part of the onboarding programme for ETH professors with an active role in academic self-governance (e.g. head of department, deputy head of department, head of institute). ETH professors who are designated for or interested in taking on a role in academic self-governance are welcome to join this workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to share good practices and approaches based on selected models and concepts for effectively navigating leadership challenges in academic self-governance.
  • Leadership responsibility without authority to issue instructions

  • Influencing strategies and stakeholder management

  • Raising awareness of leadership expectations in academic self-governance
  • Recognizing the boundaries of the leadership role in academic self-governance
  • Gaining clarity about responsibilitiy and accountability
  • Developing approaches for facilitating decisions in academic self-governance settings
  • Reflecting on current leadership challenges in academic self-governance
  • ETH professors with additional responsibilities in academic self-governance (e.g. heads of departments, deputy heads of departments, directors of studies, heads of institutes, chairpersons of competence centres or commissions)
  • ETH professors who are interested in a role in academic self-governance.
