Status of women professors at ETH Zurich
What does it mean to be a woman professor at ETH Zurich? What is everyday life like for women professors? What resources and support are available to them? The report on the study "Gendering Academic Careers at ETH Zurich" provides insights and food for thought for the further development of equal opportunities at ETH.

External study commissioned by ETH Zurich
Promoting equal opportunities for women is a key concern at ETH Zurich – including in relation to professorships. To investigate how women professors experience their academic reality at ETH Zurich, the Executive Board set up an internal commission in 2021, which in turn commissioned the University of Lausanne to conduct an independent study. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of women professors and to identify any gender-specific inequalities.
Full report and recommendations
The study results were published at the beginning of July 2025. You can
find an overview in the article "Fresh impetus to advance gender equality" (Internal news, 3 July 2025).
Position statement
The ETH Executive Board, the Conference of Department Heads (DVK) and the Lecturers’ Conference (KdL) have issued a joint position statement on the question of how gender influences academic careers at ETH Zurich.
Next steps
In order to derive concrete measures from the report's findings, all departments and central bodies are asked by the Executive Board to examine their specific contexts and develop targeted measures to promote equality and inclusion.
These measures will be discussed in structured dialogues between the Executive Board and the departments during the course of 2026. The aim is to evaluate progress and learn from each other by sharing successful approaches and experiences.
