Fostering competencies in students

At ETH Zurich, you will not only receive a solid academic education but also develop a wide range of transferable skills. Both are essential for your future professional career. The ETH Competence Framework provides guidance on which competencies are fostered at ETH Zurich.

Graphical representation of the ETH Competence Framework. The framework is represented in the shape of a diamond, with core subject-specific competencies, supported by three transferable competence domains. These are method-specific, social, and personal competencies. All four competence domains are displayed in a different colour.
“Curiosity for topics outside one's field, empathising with others, and teamwork, for example, can turn purely technical knowledge into solutions. Being aware of these competencies and strengthening them can be crucial for your professional life.”
Prof. Dr Günther Dissertori, Rector

Path

myPath is a catalogue of extracurricular activities and services at ETH Zurich designed to support the development of transferable skills.

Course Catalogue

The course catalogue shows which competencies are supported in each course (e.g. lectures, exercises).

At ETH Zurich, lecturers use the competence framework to formulate their courses' learning objectives and content so that it is easier for you to estimate what to expect from our educational offer.
