D-INFK: Computer Science

Application deadlines preselection D-INFK

Mandatory preselection for applications for the relevant exchange programme (on BSc and MSc level and for a mobility stay during the next academic year):

  • 1 December for worldwide departmental programmes: Application is possible from the information event D-INFK (see below).
  • 4 February for SEMP SMS (partner universities in Europe): Application is possible from 15 January.

In order to complete the preselection, the following information is needed:

  • Prioritized wish list with at most 5 partner universities from our worldwide departmental programmes or from SEMP SMS
  • Selection exchange semester: Autumn or Spring Semester
  • Current CV (in Englisch)
  • Current transcript of records (PDF from myStudies)
  • Completed Grades Form for the Preselection D-INFK

The application – also the application for the preselection – is binding for all listed priorities; withdrawals after submission may lead to exclusion from the exchange programmes.

Start preselection

Attendance of the information event "Mobilit?t für D-INFK-Studierende" is a mandatory part of the application (see below). Please also read the information on student exchange at D-INFK.

Students must fulfill the general prerequisites for undertaking a student exchange. Another prerequisite for a mobility stay is a sufficient academic qualification:

  • BSc: Passed first-year examinations with an average grade of at least 4.5 at the time of application. In addition, 7 out of 8 basic courses must be completed by the time the exchange begins (exceptions in the case of an overlap between the examination session and the start of the exchange semester must be discussed with the ).
  • MSc: Master's degree students must have passed the first-year examinations with a minimum average grade of 4.5, or obtained a Bachelor's degree with the minimum average grade of 4.5. The Bachelor's degree must have been obtained at ETH Zurich (not necessarily in Computer Science); a Bachelor's degree from EPFL or UZH does not entitle the student to an exchange. Participating in one exchange during the Bachelor's and one exchange during the Master's programme is possible.

If an average grade of 4.5 was not reached in the first-year examinations, qualifications in later phases of the studies are possible in the Bachelor's as well as in the Master's programmes.

The exchange programme normally lasts one semester.

  • BSc Computer Science: from the 3rd year of studies
  • MSc Computer Science: recommended from the 2nd semester (after 20 ECTS have been earned towards the Master’s degree); ideally in the 3rd (or 4th) semester after the Interfocus Courses
  • MSc Data Science: from the 2nd semester
  • MSc Cyber Security: No participation in the exchange programmes: One semester at EPFL is already a compulsory part of the Master's degree, no further mobility credits will be recognised for the Master's degree.
  • Monday, 4 November 2024, 12.15, CAB G 61
  • Attendance of the information event "Mobilit?t für D-INFK-Studierende" (in German) is a mandatory part of the application.
  • The affected students from the 3rd BSc semester onwards will receive an invitation by email in due time.

Transfer of credits

The departmental exchange coordinators handle this (see contact below). Do not contact lecturers about this topic.

BSc Computer Science

  • At most 40 ECTS can be transferred and credit transfer is possible (depending on the local course offer and upon approval by the departmental exchange coordinators) to the categories core courses, electives, minor courses, seminar, Science in Perspective (see below), and Bachelor’s thesis.
  • In order to get credits in the category core courses, courses at partner universities have to be assessed by the departmental exchange coordinators. A maximum of 16 ECTS from 3 different core courses can be accredited to this category upon approval by the departmental exchange coordinator.
  • If the partner university allows exchange students on Bachelor’s level to attend courses on Master’s level, it is possible to transfer such credits to the Master’s programme back at ETH. Follow the specific rules for the different Master's programmes.

MSc Computer Science

  • At most 20 ECTS can be transferred and credit transfer is possible (depending on the local course offer and upon approval by the departmental exchange coordinators) to the categories core electives, minor, seminar, practical work, free elective courses, and Science in Perspective (see below). Core courses and Interfocus Courses have to be attended at ETH.
  • Master's theses can be conducted in a research stay abroad (only with the consent of the supervising professor at ETH).

MSc Data Science Regulation 2017

  • At most 30 ECTS can be transferred and credit transfer is possible (depending on the local course offer and upon approval by the departmental exchange coordinators and your mentor) to the categories core electives, interdisciplinary electives, seminar, and Science in Perspective (see below). Further core courses and the Data Science Lab have to be attended at ETH.
  • Master's theses can be conducted in a research stay abroad (only with the consent of the supervising professor at ETH).

MSc Data Science Regulation 2023

  • At most 30 ECTS can be transferred and credit transfer is possible (depending on the local course offer and upon approval by the departmental exchange coordinators and your mentor) to the categories electives, seminar, and Science in Perspective (see below). Core courses and the Data Science Lab have to be attended at ETH.
  • Master's theses can be conducted in a research stay abroad (only with the consent of the supervising professor at ETH).

MSc Cyber Security

  • No participation in the exchange programmes: One semester at EPFL is already a compulsory part of the Master's degree, no further mobility credits will be recognised for the Master's degree.
  • Master's theses can be conducted in a research stay abroad (only with the consent of the supervising professor at ETH).

Science in Perspective

Upon approval by D-GESS, a maximum of 3 ECTS from course units earned during a student exchange may be recognized towards the “SiP” program. Please contact from D-GESS ahead of time and before the start of your exchange period, providing a link to the course description.
