Cyberattacks on companies and institutions are on the rise. ETH is also affected. Every day, employees in ETH's Cyber and Information Security unit fend off numerous attacks by unauthorized individuals attempting to exploit vulnerabilities and gain illicit access to systems. However, not all threats can be addressed centrally. All employees can make a significant contribution to security by taking simple measures such as using strong passwords or immediately locking their devices when leaving their workstations. A prerequisite for this is that they know where the dangers lurk.
Assessing the current level of knowledge among employees
What experience do ETH employees have with cybercrime? What protective measures are they aware of, and which ones do they already implement themselves? These questions are being investigated in a study on cybersecurity conducted by Verena Zimmermann's Professorship of Security, Privacy, and Society in collaboration with the University of Zurich and the ZHAW.
A broad survey will first assess the current level of knowledge among ETH employees and how they deal with threats. Based on this, targeted security awareness campaigns and training courses will be developed. The Cyber and Information Security section, which is also involved in the study, is responsible for implementing the measures.
“Every single response counts”
The survey will start on 25 August 2025. All ETH employees will receive an invitation by email from the mailbox . The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. “The more people take part, the more meaningful the results will be,” says Verena Zimmermann. “That's why every single response counts.”
High participation is also desirable because the data collected will be fed into the interdisciplinary research project “CYRENZH” (“Cyber Resilience Network for the Canton of Zurich”; www.cyrenzh.ch). The aim is to develop new methods for measuring cybersecurity in organizations.
