A new video portal for ETH

With the start of the autumn semester, the Multimedia Production group at IT Services has launched a new video portal. This continues to focus on the publication of lecture and event recordings, but now offers ETH staff new opportunities for independent video management.?

The new video portal remains the central channel for publishing recordings of lectures and events, as well as for storing institutional videos, such as those from the library. With the relaunch, however, staff can now upload and publish videos independently for the first time, either by sharing the video URL or by granting read (viewing videos) or write (editing videos) permissions. It is also possible to create your own (web) page with text and video blocks.

Different uses

The video portal is divided into two parts for this purpose: The publicly visible part will continue to be managed by Multimedia Production.

In the non-publicly visible part, employees can provide, share and edit their own videos: An editor offers simple editing functions, metadata (title, description) and the preview image can be changed – and even the automatically generated subtitles can be adjusted and supplemented. It is also possible to create videos: the ‘Studio’ function allows recordings to be made using the webcam and microphone of your own computer, and the screen can also be recorded.

Previous portal to remain in use until the end of the year

The new video portal is an open-source product developed by ETH Zurich in close collaboration with the University of Bern and LMU Munich. It is used by numerous universities in German-speaking countries and replaces the previous video portal. The previous portal will remain available as an archive until the end of 2025 to address any issues that may arise during migration. During the migration, the number of visible videos was also reduced through the introduction of a ‘Video Policy’ to make the new portal clearer.

Another new feature is the integration with AEM, ETH's content management system: every video from the new video portal can be directly embedded there using its URL, similar to YouTube and Vimeo.

Gone are the days when storing videos or sharing them with colleagues was a problem. And the route via the Multimedia Production desk has also been replaced by a detailed documented DIY solution.
