Bill Morandi receives the Mukaiyama Award 2026
Bill Morandi, Professor of Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB), receives the Mukaiyama Award 2026 for his outstanding achievements in the field of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. The prize is awarded by the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.
The Morandi group develops a wide range of conceptually novel chemical reactions like shuttle catalysis, single-bond metathesis or nitrogen-atom insertion that provide new strategies to construct, edit, and deconstruct organic molecules, thereby significantly advancing the field of organic chemistry. The group has also leveraged these transformations in interdisciplinary applications (e.g., recyclable polymers, POP upcycling, drug editing) and has investigated their mechanisms in great depth.
“The Mukaiyama Award is named after one of the most creative Japanese chemists, who developed numerous field-defining reactions. It is therefore a particular honor for our research to be recognized with this award.”Bill Morandi
The award was established in 2005 by the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (SSOCJ) to celebrate the 77th birthday of Professor Teruaki Mukaiyama who received the Order of Culture in 1977 from Japanese government for his outstanding contributions to synthetic organic chemistry. It consists of $3,000, a medal, and a certificate and is awarded annually to a researcher under the age of 46 for outstanding achievements in the field of synthetic organic chemistry.
