Counterfeits are encountered not only in the art world. Medicines and valuable natural products—such as essential oils—are frequently affected as well. To verify the authenticity of such products, analysts typically rely on known markers, an approach that often proves insufficient for characterizing essential oils.
Christian Steuer and his research group have now developed a novel analytical workflow to assess the quality of herbal medicines containing essential oils. Their approach employs multiblock chemometric analysis. By combining infrared spectroscopy with mass spectrometry, the researchers were able to distinguish genuine oils from counterfeits or synthetic alternatives with remarkable precision.
In recognition of his work on essential oil analysis, Christian Steuer has been honored with the DPhG Award for the Advancement of Drug Quality.
The German Pharmaceutical Society’s award aims to acknowledge both fundamental research into the quality of marketed pharmaceuticals and innovative concepts for their improvement.
