Julius von Kügelgen receives Branco Weiss Fellowship
Julius von Kügelgen, postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mathematics, is one of eight outstanding international early-career scientists who have been awarded the prestigious Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science.

Julius von Kügelgen is a postdoc at the Seminar for Statistics. In his research, he aims to develop principled new methods for extracting causal information from complex data, with a particular focus on applications in (single-cell) biology. Such causal insights can illuminate underlying mechanisms and help predict the outcomes of new experiments. Existing methods remain limited to a handful of variables and are not easily applicable to high-dimensional measurements such as thousands of pixels or RNA counts. To address these challenges, von Kügelgen’s research integrates causal inference with techniques from AI and machine learning.
About the Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science
Founded in 2002 by Swiss entrepreneur Dr Branco Weiss (?2010), the fellowship offers postdoctoral researchers from across the natural sciences, engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities the freedom to pursue an independently developed project for up to five years. A key prerequisite is that the proposed project is not part of a major research endeavour. The programme is hosted by ETH Zurich and is managed by Professors Detlef Günther, Angelika Steger, and Josef Zeyer, with selection supported by prominent international scientists.
