Vladimír Šverák receives Heinz Hopf Prize

Vladimír ?verák is Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota and?has made pioneering achievements in his research on Navier-Stokes equations.??In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the analysis of fluid mechanics equations, the Department of Mathematics will honour him with the Heinz Hopf Prize on 11 November 2025.

Prof. Vladimír ?verák

Vladimír ?verák has been musing on the same set of equations for more than three decades. “They’re simple, but their solutions are extremely complex,” he says, explaining what it is about the Navier-Stokes equations that fascinates him. Formulated by Claude-Louis Navier and George Gabriel Stokes independently from one another in the first half of the 19th century, the equations describe how fluids and air masses move. They can be found in every area of applied science and technology – from the development of aerodynamic aircraft to weather forecasting and modelling arterial blood flow. At the same time, however, they represent a profound mathematical puzzle: for decades, mathematicians have been trying to prove that the equations have a solution in all scenarios – that they are able to predict how flows will behave in every conceivable situation and at any point in the future. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in this field, the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich is honouring Vladimír ?verák with the Heinz Hopf Prize 2025.
