The room concept is based on the PBLabs RZ in the 365体育官网_365体育备用【手机在线】 Centre, where numerous project-based courses already take place. Students from the USYS department, for example, attend the Environmental Problem Solving course (PDF: Course profile), those from the MTEC department work on business plans in the Entrepreneurship course (PDF: Course profile), and computer scientists work in the Game Programming Laboratory.
Florian Rittiner, head of PBLabs, says: ‘The experience we have gained at the centre has shown us how important flexible and multifunctional spaces are for future teaching development. Not only for project-based, practical teaching formats, but also for the implementation of the Teaching 2040 vision and the realisation of the campus of the future.’
Flexible space for small and large groups
Proven elements, such as mobile furniture and flexible room division into different zones, were adopted and adapted to the conditions of the new location. New features include sound-absorbing wall coverings with integrated whiteboard surfaces. There is also additional storage space for ongoing projects or learning materials.
The redesign was carried out in close cooperation between the Rectorate and the Real Estate Department. Project manager Catharina Weis says: "This example shows that in many ETH buildings, it is possible to create a completely new sense of space through targeted measures and architectural interventions. The space, which previously offered loosely furnished student workspaces, can now be used as a flexibly designed classroom that is suitable for small groups as well as larger events."
