Guided tours of the ETH rodent facility

Animal research is vital for many fields of scientific inquiry at ETH Zurich. As the university is dedicated to open dialogue about its animal-based research, the ETH Phenomics Center and the ETH Animal Welfare & 3R Office invite staff to join a guided tour of the university’s rodent facility.?

How does ETH Zurich conduct research involving animals? Why are rodents chosen as model organisms? What is a typical day like for a rodent? Anyone wishing to get a realistic, first-hand impression of laboratory conditions will have the chance to join a guided tour of the rodent facility in spring and early summer 2026, when the ETH Phenomics Center (EPIC) opens its doors again to visitors.

During the roughly three-hour tour, participants will learn about the housing, husbandry and welfare of rodents at ETH. Staff from EPIC’s rodent facility and members of the Animal Welfare & 3R Office will explain the scientific reasons for animal experimentation, the strict legal standards they are required to follow and the importance of expertise, care and responsibility in the daily handling of the animals.

The tours offer a valuable insight into the significance of animal research at ETH Zurich, while also ensuring transparency about the animals’ living conditions and the responsibilities the university undertakes in this area.
