Accidents happen suddenly and unintentionally. Rapid response is useful in any case. In the event of an accident, please immediately alert the internal emergency number 888 or +41 44 342 11 88 if you are calling from a mobile phone
First Aid Material
First aid kits are available, mounted on wall brackets in public areas, so that care can be given for minor injuries. If a kit or material is missing, you will receive a replacement from the responsible Information and Service Centre. All members of the first aid team have a bag with the required material. They deploy directly from their place of work to the patient, carrying this bag.
Defibrillators
30 defibrillators, housed in alarm-secured wall cases, are strategically distributed throughout ETH Zurich. If a case is opened and a defibrillator is taken out, an alarm is triggered for the Emergency Desk and on the pagers of the responsible building area employees (Facility Management Department). The additional alerting of the Emergency Desk, stating the area of deployment, is still necessary as the defibrillators currently cannot be located yet. The defibrillators will, however, be brought to the area of deployment automatically by the Security Service or the first aid team. In addition, all vehicles of the Zurich city police and Zurich emergency services are also equipped with defibrillators. The Emergency Desk can also call these external intervention units if required.

The First Aid Team at ETH Zurich does its part to ensure that members of and guests at ETH Zurich are taken care of as quickly as possible in the event of illness or injury and can be referred to the right care facilities. Around 120 employees from all areas of ETH make themselves available as lay helpers on a part-time basis. In buildings with a high number of users, first aid rooms are available for the inpatient care of patients. In principle, the EHT always comes to the scene of the incident and decides whether to alert the ambulance or retreat to a first aid room. The rooms are equipped with beds or couches and other EHT material.
The rooms can also be used as a retreat by people with health impairments and mothers. On the map of retreat rooms you will find the locations and details of the equipment in the rooms.
ETH members enter a key application in GMIS or by e-mail to and can obtain the key from the responsible ISC after three working days.
Guests can borrow a key for one-time access from the ISC HG D 61.1 or HIL D 25.1.
At ETH Zurich, experimental research is carried out in around 2,300 laboratory rooms using a wide variety of chemicals. Despite extensive preventive measures, incidents involving chemicals (C incidents) cannot be completely avoided.
The Chemical Intervention Team (CIT) is deployed at the Zentrum and H?nggerberg sites during normal working hours in the following cases:
- Dealing with minor acute C incidents that are too much for users alone, but which are not serious enough to justify a (chargeable) deployment of the chemical brigade.
- Dealing with so-called "non-acute" events where there is no imminent danger but action is required.
- Advice on planning and managing non-acute C incidents (risk analysis and operational planning); if necessary, in cooperation with external bodies.
- Supporting the interface to the chemical emergency unit in the event of major acute incidents. The team consists of volunteer members who have undergone a medical fitness assessment and receive regular training to enable them to successfully and safely complete their missions.

In the event of accidents in laboratories and workshops, SSHE carries out an accident investigation. This incident investigation is not about looking for culprits. The aim of accident investigation is to avoid similar incidents in the future and to improve the operational safety system.
