Risk insurance
Risk insurance provides protection against the financial consequences of death or disability. At ETH Zurich, all fixed-term employees and interns whose AHV annual salary does not exceed the amount of the maximum single AHV old-age pension are insured with Baloise.
Admission criteria
All persons with a fixed-term internship or employment contract at ETH Zurich are automatically admitted to the risk insurance scheme, provided that their income does not exceed CHF 22,680 (BVG entry threshold) – their AHV annual salary does not exceed the amount of the maximum single AHV old-age pension – and are not subject to mandatory pension fund insurance.
Premiums
The insurance premium is deducted from the salary on a monthly basis. Contributions are structured as follows:
- Insured person: 0.61% of the AHV-liable gross salary per month
- Employer: Equal contribution as the insured person
The premium contributions serve exclusively to cover risks such as death or disability and are not accumulated to finance future old-age benefits.
Insurance cover at a glance
Admission to the risk insurance scheme is generally granted without a medical examination, provided that the person is fully fit for work.
Persons who are not fully fit for work on the first day of employment are admitted to the insurance scheme only once full fitness for work has been regained.
Disability or incapacity for work exists if, as an insured person, you are wholly or partially unable to pursue your profession or any other gainful activity due to a medically verifiable illness. Disability is deemed to exist once a legally binding pension decision has been issued by the Disability insurance (IV/AI).
Benefits
Entitlement to full regulatory benefits exists from a degree of disability of at least 70%. For a degree of disability below 70%, benefits are adjusted in proportion to the degree of impairment in accordance with external page Article 24 BVG. Partial disability of less than 40% does not give rise to any entitlement to benefits.
If disability occurs on a temporary or permanent basis, the disability pension is paid after a period of 24 months of incapacity for work. The amount and duration of benefits are regulated as follows:
- Full disability pension (degree of disability >70%): CHF 18,000 per year
- Degree of disability between 40% and 70%: Pro rata benefits in accordance with the BVG
- Duration of benefits: Until retirement or death
