Appraisal interview Dialog
Positive ongoing exchange between supervisors and employees is a source of motivation and important for a successful working relationship.

Supervisors need to conduct an appraisal interview with their employees at least once per year. Typically it should take place sometime between August and the end of October.
They take a look back together and give each other feedback: What has gone well? What could be done better? You will also discuss new objectives and tasks and clarify expectations regarding behavior and performance, with a focus also on your personal and professional development.

The Dialog appraisal interview form can also be used for interim appraisal meetings throughout the year.
There are separate guidelines and templates for the appraisal interview for doctoral students and professors.
During the pilot phase in the autumn of 2023, around 900 ETH employees, including both supervisors and staff, successfully carried out a test of the new appraisal format.
The Dialog appraisal format was rolled out and evaluated in late June 2024 for all employees of ETH Zurich (to the evaluation of the Dialog). Excluded from Dialog are doctoral students, professors and apprentices, for which separate appraisal formats apply, as well as employees paid an hourly wage and teaching assistants.
