Inclusive communication

How we communicate shapes our everyday working and study lives. Here you will find guidance and resources on contemporary communication practices at ETH Zurich.

Language not only shapes perceptions and behaviours but also reflects social values. Conscious, inclusive communication helps to address all people equally and to counteract stereotypes and discrimination.

ETH Zurich is committed to linguistic equality and inclusion and strives to be both up-to-date and forward-thinking in all its interactions.

Principles of inclusive communication

With our communication, we create more clarity – and fewer misunderstandings.
At ETH Zurich, we approach each interaction with an open mind, listen to each other and respond to the needs of others.
In the event of uncertainty, we ask respectful questions.
We are sensitive to when diversity issues are important for communicating or working together.

The guide to inclusive communication at ETH Zurich shows how language can serve as a tool to promote a respectful, discrimination-sensitive, and inclusive university culture.

Important information about the guide

The guide offers recommendations for inclusive and discrimination-sensitive communication that promotes a respectful university culture.

The recommendations are intended as a support tool and do not claim to be exhaustive.
They are not relevant for grading or examinations.
There are no requirements for the use of special gender-inclusive orthography (e.g. colons when writing gender-inclusive forms in German).
Legal texts are based on the guidelines issued by the Federal Chancellery.
As a member of ETH Zurich, you are required to communicate respectfully in accordance with the Download Code of Conduct on Respect (PDF, 479 KB).
Discriminatory behaviour such as insulting remarks (including those made online) will not be tolerated at ETH Zurich and may result in consequences (see regulations for members of ETH Zurich regarding concerns about and reporting of inappropriate behaviour and conflicts in the workplace).

How do we communicate in ways that include everyone? In a short online session, the new guide to inclusive communication at ETH Zurich is introduced in both German and English. You will gain a concise overview of key principles, different dimensions of inclusive communication, and practical tips for everyday situations. external page More information and registration.

2 April 2026, 12.30 a.m. – 1.30 p.m., Racism in language – Recognizing discrimination and acting respectfully (online, German)

How does racism-sensitive communication work? In this online session, participants will gain fundamental knowledge about racism as well as practical examples of racism-sensitive language in everyday life and in the university context. The new guide to inclusive communication at ETH Zurich will also be presented, offering recommendations for using language respectfully in the context of racism. external page More information and registration.
